Skin Check Challenge

Join in our Skin Check Challenge to raise awareness of melanoma and sun safety

We’ve launched a new campaign this week to raise awareness of melanoma and the importance of early detection and sun safety during the summer months.

The Skin Check Challenge, part of our GP Talks series, features Dr Mountis, a GP at our partner practice Lakeside Healthcare at St Neots, who demonstrates how to check your skin for early signs of melanoma and explains what to do if you notice any changes.

“Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body,” said Dr Mountis.

“But if it’s found early, treatment is more effective, and outcomes are much better. We want everyone to take a few minutes to check their skin and share this message with friends and family. A small action could save a life.”

“We’re also reminding people how easy it is to protect their skin with a few simple habits when spending time outdoors.”

How to take part in the Skin Check Challenge

  1. Watch our GP Talks: Skin Check Challenge video right here on our website, on Facebook, or on our YouTube channel.
  2. Use the ABCDE checklist to check your skin for unusual changes.
  3. Share the video on Facebook using the hashtag #SkinCheckChallenge to raise awareness.

Printed copies of the checklist and sun safety tips are available at the practice for patients without internet access.

Spotting melanoma – the ABCDE checklist:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole or mark does not match the other.
  • B – Border: Edges are irregular, blurred or not well defined.
  • C – Colour: Uneven colouring or multiple shades in one mole.
  • D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm, though some melanomas may be smaller.
  • E – Evolution: Any change in size, shape, colour, or symptoms such as bleeding or itching.

Sun safety tips

  • Check the UV Index and apply protection when levels are 3 or higher.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ and 4 – 5 star UVA protection.
  • Apply sunscreen 15 – 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or after swimming/sweating.
  • Wear protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat, UV400-rated sunglasses, and loose long-sleeved tops.
  • Seek shade between 11am and 3pm when UV rays are strongest.

If you’re concerned about a mole or skin change, please contact us. You can also submit a request using Anima, our secure online consultation platform.

The Skin Check Challenge is open to all, not just our registered patients. By checking your skin and sharing the message, you can help raise awareness and encourage others to stay safe in the sun.
