Weight loss injections - Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)
Important Information for Patients
We understand that there is a great deal of interest in weight loss injections such as Mounjaro and Wegovy, and many people are eager to know when these treatments will become available through the NHS.
At present, weight loss injections are not yet available on NHS prescription, and GPs are not able to prescribe them. We appreciate that this may be frustrating, especially for those who are actively seeking help with managing their weight.
The NHS is planning to roll out weight loss injections from July 2025, starting with a limited group of individuals who are struggling with obesity and related health conditions. We are currently awaiting further guidance from NHS England about who will be eligible and how the treatment will be made available.
We have received a high number of appointment requests to discuss these medications. While we cannot prescribe these injections at this time, we are very happy to offer support through other weight and lifestyle management options, including referrals to specialist services where appropriate.
We also understand that some patients are accessing these medications through private providers. Please be aware that if you choose this route, the safe prescribing and ongoing monitoring is the responsibility of the private provider, not your GP practice. For your safety, it is essential to share your full medical history and current medications with the private provider.
We will keep you updated as soon as more information becomes available, and we will contact eligible patients directly when we are able to offer this treatment.
To help us prepare, please make sure your height and weight measurements are up to date on your health record. You can update these using the health kiosk in the surgery.
Oral HRT and Contraception:
If you are on weight loss injections and take either oral HRT and or oral contraception please contact the surgery to have a medication review. The weight loss injections can change the effectiveness of contraception and HRT.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
